my grandmother bakes the best cakes ever
  and I can't help myself
  I have to be there

  kissing her
  singing with her
  the radio's on
  so far away

  I listen, I go closer
  I can't stand anymore
  I leave the cakes unfinished
and start the television set: old and grumbling
  knees to my mouth
     I listen I go closer.

The same desperate falling
    -- for Trevor

The same desperate falling that I have
known all my life appears again.
It is true.
For days now I haven't found a new way of loving you,
a new system for avoiding doubts.
Perhaps coming home did that, the feeling of being again out of all time.
Perhaps I am immature, as you think I am.
A child. Not fit to stay alone, not able to make decisions,
not experienced enough to live, for God's sake,  a prisoner of the same desperate falling.

A red Christmas tree at the end of the world*

Cold again
under my shallow hope, a beach, a man
 unknown, dreaming again, headswirling
and the scraggly outline of two islands
     in the sea, improbably faraway

somewhere, a strange Christmas tree
puffs its red flowers in the breeze
one I have on a postcard
that I kept by the telephone
   strange and exotique: comfort
          reassuringly close.
