My Mother’s Kitchen

my mother stirring a large preserving pan

her famous rhubarb chutney

simmering away

yum

I hear her humming

she’s like a squirrel

never happier than preparing for the winter months

she opens the oven door

out comes a tray of cheese scones

crunchy brown on top

she wraps them in a linen tea towel

the steam rising

she’s been waiting for me

silver tea things on a tray
