Enigmatic blue on a weekly basis - Andy Leleisi'uao
This poem was written early this year and came highly recommended in the New Zealand Post Poetry Competition.

Stolen

You weren't what I'd call spectacular.
You weren't one of those sunsets
that looked painted upon the sky.
You simply 'were.'
You gave me objections.
You gave me reasons.

So differently we moved through life
stopping at odd occasions to clash.
You thought Hemingway was a rock star's dog,
You thought chocolate was the best milk
because you hadn't tried the others.
You didn't like rain because it smelt bad
not because it got your hair wet.

I could have sworn you had gravel in your eyes.
They reminded me of learning to ride my bike
without trainer wheels
Grazed knees,
busted lips,
bruises.
I'd look away
because I couldn't stand it.

You waited in the car
while I was in the dairy across the road.
When I came back the radio was turned up.
A song that I loved and you didn't.
Your speakers and I sang
"You have stolen my heart"
while you drove us to the beach
and in the wet sand,
you wrote me a poem.
